On TripAdvisor.com, as of July 2013, Carnelia Resort’s ranking had improved slightly to 57th out of 67 resorts (from 59th in December 2012) but not due to any new reviews as there have been none. Presumably the hotel must be very quiet. If you are planning to book please check first whether the hotel is still open.
39 per cent of reviewers rated it as either “very good” or “excellent” (81 out of 206 – all reviews prior to December 2012) and less than 34 per cent ( 70 out of 206 ) rating it as either “poor” or “terrible”. Unusually no indication is given as to what percentage of Trip Advisor reviewers would recommend the hotel.
On Holildaycheck.com, as of July 2013, it was awarded a respectable average of 4.2 out of six stars but you should note that there have been no new reviews since October 2012. The resort received the best scores for rooms at 4.7, service at 4.4 and location at 4.3 with lower scores for sport at 3.9 and gastronomy trailing at 3.8.
Reviews on TripAdvisor and HolidayCheck have been mixed, but generally positive –
“The sea is wonderful and the reef comes right up to the shore. You can stroll as far as the nearby hotel (Akassia) and south as far as the Bay of Shells, along the desert……and you can enjoy a breathtaking sunset.”
“Spectacular coral reefs, sea flora at hand without even having to get wet. Carpets of starfish, urchins of incredible size, giant shells everywhere….and rare blue coral….all visible from the beach !”
“The diving station was the absolute highlight. Super great.”
“The diving and snorkeling was great. The diving school was very good and all were very friendly. You can walk into the sea even if it is very windy, since the jetty is located in a bay.”
“After a complaint everything was fine. Two very large beds, bathroom with shower, small terrace, fridge, safe. We were satisfied.”
“Our room was always cleaned early and decorated with towel sculptures.”
ON THE FOOD
“The food was okay. We were not starved and there was always something for us. None of us had stomach upsets.”
“The pool was sometimes even colder than the neighbouring sea and therefore not usable. This should change hopefully as temperatures rise.”
ON THE STAFF
“They reacted immediately to any complaints and were always keen to help and to ensure everything was right for us.”
“The Egyptians very kind. wonderful animators, too nice……..All very helpful for anything.”
“The staff was always friendly and helpful.”
ON THE BEAUTY CENTRE
“I remember the beautiful sea, the wind that I usually hate but that there was welcome….I want to go now, now, now !”
“We had a great time. It’s a resort that offers relaxation….great food, attentive staff, clean rooms, a wild and fascinating environs and as for the sea – I can’t think of sufficient adjectives to describe it. Add to this the nightly dimming of the outdoor lights and if you raise your eyes the stars put on a show.”
“For us it was the first time in Egypt and a very good hotel, a bit Spartan but excellent, clean, we ate well and the waiters were the kindest we’ve ever had. We could not have found a better environment for our first experience of Egypt.”
“A great hotel with everything you could want: great food, nice atmosphere, beautiful pool and a great room…..but only ten guests in the whole hotel…This caused by the revolution…..I hope it gets on its’ feet again.”
“The hotel itself, however, can only be described as adequate. The rooms were okay and the food enjoyable. Overall the complex a bit scruffy and this underlined by an occupancy of only about 20 guests”
